I wrote “Eagle” when I was 15,
which was a very dark time in my life,
so it’s full of drama, teen angst
and the quest for identity.
I originally called it “A Song For Me” and it was the first musical snapshot
of my life to help me find
strength in times of sadness.
It’s about relying on a growing
but reluctant need for independence
and yet in the process falling into denial
about wanting to be loved. It could be solem, so I tried to
lift it
with the orchestra parts.
I always wanted to play the strings I could hear
in my head and this is how they came out,
hopefully not to dominating.
It sounds sad but it has a positive resolution,
and seems to be very popular with 15-year olds!
I’ve also done this song as a simple
jazz-lounge touch song,
just close, dry vocals and a
nylon stringed guitar,
more like Billy Holiday.
Lyrics
Imagine I'm a willow tree
That bows its head down low,
My weeping leaves
Are weeping thoughts
That only a fool could know.
And should I stand alone too long,
Just like I did before,
I'll cast my memories into the river deep,
One day to reach your shore.
Imagine I'm an eagle
That glides upon the breeze,
Without a love or care in the world,
I wander where I please.
But if I've landed inside your heart,
And turned the night to day,
Then greet me with your loving arms
And make me want to stay.
Or I shall fly away again,
Searching for someone
To share the care and tenderness,
Till all the loving's done.
